PROTOTYPE-----Pediatric FlexView is a channeled video laryngoscope with an articulating distal section and a flexible design that increases functionality as well as comfort for the pediatric patient. For use in even remote locations such as the delivery suite or intensive care unit, Pediatric FlexView incorporates a lightweight design, slim insertion profile, anti-fog capability, the ability to conform to patient anatomy, and a disposable sheath. Articulation allows vertical compensation not seen with rigid devices and simplifies laryngoscopy. The device will utilize soft rubber and round plastic components to avoid tissue trauma and conforms to the child’s airway to enhance patient safety.

Technical Specifications:

Managing the pediatric airway is a unique challenge for clinicians, particularly with intubation, the procedure of inserting an endotracheal tube into a patient's trachea to enable external ventilation. It is routinely performed in both surgical and emergency medical situations. The pediatric anatomy poses unique challenges making visualization and tube placement more complex for a child.  Rigid laryngoscopy requires conformation of patient anatomy to the device, and this can lead to failed intubation and unnecessary soft tissue injuries. There is an unmet need for devices, especially in pediatric care, that conform to the patient’s anatomy to improve success rates and decrease morbidity.

Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium (APDC) funds will be used for the design, prototype, and testing of the pediatric model of an adult FlexView, which was developed under a Department of Defense grant for both military and civilian use.
