The Going to the Doctor Language Kit, model LK-DO, is an independent living skills and language tutorial program designed for use by individuals with cognitive or communication disabilities. The materials in this unit help students understand what to expect when going to the doctor. Materials include a book written with limited vocabulary and repetitive lines using Mayer-Johnson Picture Communication Symbols (see entry); an interactive computer book that combines text, pictures, speech and sound; and a songboard, word cards, and vocabulary games. Events are sequenced in the Boardmaker book and computer story. Sequence cards reinforce and reassure about events, both in the classroom and while at the doctor's office. Pain indicator charts help students communicate their needs at school, home, or to medical personnel.
