Introduction to Existential Dream Analysis, Friday, January 30,
The purpose of this session is to briefly introduce historical, philosophical, theoretical, and practical perspectives for understanding existential psychotherapy and the analysis of dreams. The four most widely used systematic, theoretical approaches to the analysis of dreams will be summarized and contrasted using various heuristic processes common to all. Basic phenomenological attitudes and methods of existential analysis will be introduced and illustrated with a selection of dreams from an extraordinary series of 823 dreams reported in the course of a single existential analysis.

Dreams in Existential Analysis and Psychotherapy, Saturday, January 31, 2015, 9:00 AM ? 5:00 PM
This full day workshop begins with an introduction to the theory and practice of existential analysis and psychotherapy. The history, character and basic tenants of existential psychotherapy will be presented to clarify what most essentially distinguishes this approach from other perspectives in depth psychology and psychotherapy. Four everyday heuristic processes (recalling, exploring, understanding, integrating) common to all systematic approaches to dream analysis in psychotherapy will be presented and discussed with reference to their purpose and significance for understanding dreams in personal life and psychotherapy. A brief discussion of the biology of sleeping and dreaming and the difficulty and challenge of recalling dreams will be followed by suggestions for increasing dream recall. The most important practical focus of the entire workshop will be on the most effective ways to explore the dreaming and waking life of the dreamer, a process Carl Jung aptly referred to as ?gathering a context? for understanding dreams.
